The Mistresses House was once part of a much larger house and was the home to the mistress to Hamon Le Strange (1840-1918) who lived in the main house, Number 9 Boston Square. There are interconnecting doors (now sealed) between the houses so he could visit her in secret. The Le Strange family (whose direct descendants still live locally) built and designed the resort of Hunstanton in the 1800s.  The property was designed by the renowned architect HG Ibberson in the Arts and Crafts style, and retains many of its original features such as carved beams and some wonderful cast fireplaces.  The upper floor is reached via a winding staircase enclosed in an interesting turret of chequerboard style brick work. There is another secret staircase to the sitting room from the second bedroom.  The current owner has left in the property a brief history of the house and the area which makes very interesting reading.  Staying in the house will give guests a real experience of living in a period property. Hunstanton is a hidden gem, apart from the obvious bucket and spade attraction and the great beach, the architecture is well worth a closer look. The house is less than 5 minutes walk to the clifftop.

Local Area

Hunstanton is a traditional Victorian seaside town complete with a wonderful sandy beach and fish and chip shops.  It has become a mecca for Kite Surfers and there are regular competitions held over the year.  Buckets and spades are the order of the day and the town bustles during the summer months. The town was founded by Henry Le Strange and in 1846 he had the idea to cash in on the new craze of bathing in the sea by  creating the \'sea bathing station of Hunstanton St Edmund. There are many interesting buildings around the original Victorian town, many in the Arts and Crafts style.  The architect HG Ibberson being responsible for many of the fine buildings.  With grassy peaceful squares, a long promenande and a green that runs down to the bandstand Hunstanton provides a traditional seaside family holiday for everyone. Guests not been to Hunstanton before are always surprised at what a fabulous beach there is, it is one of only a couple that you can actually walk to without crossing the salt marshes, and it is well worth making the detour from the more well known places like Brancaster. The famous red and white striped cliffs are a good source of fossils.
