Property details

A really stunning chapel conversion - stylish, romantic, luxurious - a perfect rural escape for a couple or two.

This super characterful holiday retreat has the 'wow factor' in abundance. With clever interior design, the use of fabulous fabrics, statement wallpapers and heritage paint colours, an eclectic mix of contemporary and 'antique' furniture, and super comfy beds that you won't want to get out of, the interior has a slightly boutique, industrial/warehouse feel with an odd 'nod' to the chapel's past.

Enter the front door and walk into an open plan light-filled living space combining the kitchen, a dining area and an elegant, but cosy seating area around a log burning stove (pour a glass of wine, open a good book and take a pew). Double french doors lead out onto the terrace (with glazed canopy and bespoke dining table) and pretty parterre garden, with open rural views beyond. At the rear of the room, a door opens into a wonderful chill-out, dual aspect snug/cinema-style tv room, with sumptuous four-seater sofa and widescreen tv inset into library shelving and door opening onto the patio. Upstairs are two glamorous bedrooms (king size and super king zip-and-link, both dressed with high thread count linen) and two bathrooms.

Although The Old Chapel is just perfect for a romantic getaway, it is equally suitable for a group of friends, as well as a small family. This pretty and peaceful rural village is a superb base from which to explore both rural and coastal North Norfolk at any time of the year. Only a twenty minute drive to the beautiful north Norfolk coast where you can discover charming coastal villages, some great gastro pubs, fantastic scenery and lots more. For boutique shopping, the popular Georgian market towns of Holt and Burnham Market are both within easy reach. The nearby market town of Fakenham has a fantastic Thursday market, its own well attended racecourse and Pensthorpe Nature Reserve and The Hawk & Owl Trust on its doorstep. Thursford, famous for its Christmas Spectacular and Steam Collection, is but a short drive away.

The Old Chapel holiday cottage location

Surrounding local area

The village of Gunthorpe is situated in a shallow valley on the eastern side of the A148 King’s Lynn to Cromer road. At the centre of the village is a green where there is a convergence of five roads. In the north west of the village there is a parish church which is dedicated to Saint Mary. Close by is the old village school which was built in 1869, but now closed. It is a very historical village with many interesting buildings including Gunthorpe Hall, designed by Sir John Soane who was the architect of The Bank of England building in Threadneedle Street. Close to the market towns of both Fakenham and Holt and just a short drive to the coast.

Guest reviews

Just a quick note to thank you for organising our holiday at the Old Chapel. We loved Norfolk and the surrounding areas around Gunthorpe and in particular we really enjoyed our stay at the Old Chapel, a delightful cottage very suitably furnished for visitors.

Our family of 4 + dog thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Old Chapel. Lovely property with garden backing onto fields. The facilities were great and the welcome pack gratefully received. Only thing lacking about the location is a village pub and shop within walking distance. Have already recommended to friends and family.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Old Chapel. We found the house clean, comfortable and well equipped in a very peaceful location. The shower in the main bathroom is very good. The beds are comfortable with lovely down pillows and duvets. You will need a car to get around and the location is good for exploring the local towns, restaurants, beaches, walks and attractions. We had very good weather while we there which did disrupt the TV signal so would suggest taking some DVD's if you'd like to relax in front of the TV occasionally. When we did have reason to contact Norfolk Hideaways they very quickly dealt with a slow draining sink and constantly kept us updated, with no disruption to our holiday. We would highly recommend The Old Chapel and Norfolk Hideaways.
