Property details

Once a Victorian Station Master's house, now a fabulous peaceful woodland retreat, full of character and colour, with easy access to both coastal and rural North Norfolk.

The period feel of the property has not been lost, just enhanced by an eclectic, interesting and individual style, with up-cycled lamps, retro finds and colourful decor. This half timbered house feels welcoming and relaxing as soon as you walk through the door. If you are looking for space, privacy and somewhere 'off the beaten track' to chill out, this lovely property will appeal to you. Ideal for a small family, a couple or friends, there is lots of room to spread out, both inside and out. There are two bedrooms on the first floor (king size and twin) and two bathrooms. One is quite a surprise, unique and rather quirky - a bath 'cupboard' in the master bedroom - the other one is a very smart shower room. Downstairs is a well-equipped kitchen, a separate utility/cloakroom, a spacious dining room, and a really cosy, comfortable sitting room with an open fire and a table for a romantic diner a deux. The garden runs to three sides of the house and is quite magical, with different 'rooms' to explore and enjoy.

Helhoughton is a small village surrounded by beautiful countryside, just south west of the market town of Fakenham, and about twenty minutes from the coastal resort of Wells-next-the-Sea. It is a great base for exploring this beautiful area of North Norfolk, perfect for walking and cycling, as well as visiting local attractions - Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, Sculthorpe Hawk and Owl Trust, The Thursford Collection and Christmas Spectacular - and enjoying a day at nearby Fakenham Races!

Surrounding local area

Helhoughton is a small village surrounded by attractive countryside. A peaceful location that has very good access to the North Norfolk Coast, the coastal villages of Wells, Burnham Market and Brancaster and the sandy beaches of Thornham and Holme. The RSPB site at Titchwell offers wonderful bird-watching opportunities, and the Hawk & Owl Trust at Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve is close by. The attractive market town of Fakenham is a short drive away, with its racecourse, shops, bowling alley, cinema, restaurants and pubs and a Thursday market which should not be missed. Pensthorpe is a great day out for all ages and is just 3 miles south east of Fakenham. Extreeme Woodland High Ropes Adventure Course is eight miles away if you're feeling daring, and National Cycle Routes 1 & 2 are just two of the routes that are in the locality and they will certainly test your staying power. A great location for a holiday at any time of the year with lots to see and do.

Guest reviews

Had a lovely stay here in your delightful home. The house is very quirky, warm and cost and very well kitted out. The wine on arrival was most welcome. Everything you could possibly want is close by. We went to Creake Abbey and Pensthorpe Christmas markets (both lovely places to visit anyway). Even went to the seal life centre at Hunstanton which we have never done in all the years of coming to Norfolk, which was well worth it. A bracing walk to Blakeney and a Heritage walk around Kings Lynn finished off a lovely week.

What an absolutely lovely stay at Station House. we couldn't think of a better way to escape city life than spending a weekend here. From watching the birds in the garden to sitting by the fire in the evening - It's all been perfectly relaxing. We'd also recommend The Barsham Arms for good 'pub grub' and lovely atmosphere. Also the West Runton Shire Horse and Animal Rescue Centre was a lovely day out - go and adopt a shire horse! Plus they have an excellent range of vegan cakes - yummy!! Go and get some chips from no1 Cromer and get them watching the sea roll by. You can't come to the coast and not do that! All in all a lovely visit - we will be back!

Lovely property, very nicely done out with everything you need. In the middle of a wood with a beautiful garden. We had such a relaxing time and would definitely go back.

Lovely, homely, well equipped quiet place to stay. We are a family of 4, 2 adults with sons 14 and 9. I chose the property for its aesthetics, garden and location. It did not disappoint. The property is clean and stylish and feels like a home from home. Everything was easy, from finding keys and towels to the useful information provided about places to visit and eat. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

Such a wonderful stay - first trip with our 5 month old! Wonderful little touches - everything we could have needed. Such a beautiful part of the UK to explore - Holkham beach was just perfect - The White Horse in Brancaster was a lovely spot for dinner. Burnham Market was great for wondering around shops nad pub crawl! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Character property tucked away. We really enjoyed our stay at Station House. The property has been very tastefully restored and updated, retaining many original features while providing all the modern amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. The location is wooded and quite remote, and the atmosphere enhanced by the presence of the adjacent restored station. It is very quiet, with very little passing traffic, and plenty of wildlife, including owls and deer.

Sadly just a short stay (5 days) but what a wonderful property, so sympathetically restored and what a great location, with the station still intact, yet miles from anywhere! Please find time to visit the church at Houghton-on-the-Hill, open each day 2-4pm.

We've had a lovely week exploring North Norfolk and it's been great to return each evening to the welcoming warmth of Station House. Such a treat to have a real fire and loved the thoughtful quirkiness of the style. Thank you.

Many thanks for this lovely place to stay. We really enjoyed our time here although it was only for a short time. We aim to come again in the summer - minus the snow! Thank you for the card and wine - it added something special to our anniversary celebrations. The suggested eating places went down a treat also.
