Property details

Greengage is a beautifully restored period cottage in the rural village of Gunthorpe, a fifteen minute drive from the North Norfolk coast. The owners have put a lot of thought into the restoration and the result is a charming, cosy cottage with the special addition of a vintage ‘secret’ potting shed for romantic suppers in front of the roaring fire.

The accommodation is stylish with luxury linens, towels and hand soaps. There will also be a welcome pack waiting for guest’s arrival. Many of the original features such as old latch doors and cupboards are retained. There are two bedrooms on the first floor (please note the stairs are steep), with a shower room and WC. The kitchen is contemporary and the sitting room traditional with original Pamment flooring.

The gardens are a real feature of the house, planted in a traditional cottage style, and the original potting shed has been transformed into a very special dining area. (Please note there is a right of way to the adjoining cottage over the rear courtyard.) The cottage is next door to Quince Cottage, and both cottages could be booked together and the wonderful Potting Shed used as a communal dining room or for a special anniversary/supper.

Greengage holiday cottage location

Surrounding local area

The village of Gunthorpe is situated in a shallow valley on the eastern side of the A148 King’s Lynn to Cromer road. At the centre of the village is a green where there is a convergence of five roads. In the north west of the village there is a parish church which is dedicated to Saint Mary. Close by is the old village school which was built in 1869, but now closed. It is a very historical village with many interesting buildings including Gunthorpe Hall, designed by Sir John Soane who was the architect of The Bank of England building in Threadneelde Street. Close to the market towns of both Fakenham and Holt and just a short drive to the coast.

Guest reviews

Greengage was a beautiful little cottage but it had everything we needed and was a great location for us because it was just a short drive to lots of places that we wanted to visit. It is exactly like the pictures! We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children 5 & 11) and the size wasnt an issue for us at all. The washer dryer in the utility room was so handy! I cant really say that we had any issues because we didn’t! I would highly recommend this cottage as a base for visiting the Norfolk area. We loved it and would definitely use it again! (I have rated customer service as “ok” because we didnt actually deal with anybody so cant comment good or bad).

The cottage is located in a small village not far from all the local places of interest and beaches. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and the bed was very comfortable. There were plenty of logs available in the lounge for the log burner which we lit on two evenings as the temperature had dropped. There is a nice long garden beyond the potting shed which is ideal for dogs to have a nice run around and to enjoy a glass of wine. It was a nice surprise to have the welcome pack left in the kitchen for us. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a nice relaxing break to re-charge the batteries.

Great cottage just as advertised on website. Bed was very comfy and the welcome milk cake and wine was a nice touch.very pretty location and a great base to visit North Norfolk but a car is essential. It was just two of us and our Jack Russell Belle but I imagine that although upstairs was fine the living room might be a bit snug for 4 adults. That said we had a great time and I would definitely recommend this cottage to my friends.

We had a lovely stay at Greengage. The property is in a very peaceful village yet very close to all that North Norfolk has to offer. We particularly appreciated the well-equipped kitchen and very comfortable bed. The cottage stairs were a little steep for our toddler, but it didn't detract from our stay and our dog absolutely loved the beautiful garden and garden room.

A beautiful cottage in a fabulous Norfolk village. Thanks for a wonderful stay at Greengage cottage - a lovely, well-equipped cottage in a great location. Everything we needed was to hand and the owners were very generous in their provision of linen, towels etc. We were particularly touched by the kindness in welcoming us with a lovely selection of cakes, biscuits, chocolates and even prosecco. It was without doubt one of the best cottages we've stayed in and we will definitely be back. Many thanks!

My best friend and I had a lovely break in the cottage, it was very relaxing, well maintained and in a good position for reaching the attractions of North Norfolk. I wouldn't hesitate to re-book and recommend it to anyone (subject to the very steep stairs of course).

A very pleasant and peaceful stay - we spent a week in Greengage after New Year. We enjoyed every minute of it. We loved the rural location bringing much needed peace and quiet, and the cottage is very clean and nicely decorated.
