Surrounding local area

Salthouse is a picturesque village located on the North Norfolk Coast just north of the small market town of Holt, and just east of Blakeney and Cley.

Salthouse is a situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and overlooks the salt marshes next to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve at Cley. Clustered around the village green are pretty cottages, a pub with a large front garden that looks directly over the salt marsh, Cookies Crab Shop offering platters of seafood, salads, sandwiches and ice cream. East of the village, past the village pond, is a cottage where you can buy Fish & Chips during the summer months.

The magnificent church of Salthouse holds regular art exhibitions and concerts throughout the year. A new shop has recently opened called The Old Post Office selling local produce including beef from the cattle grazed on the marsh.

The beach is mainly pebble and shingle, but unlike other parts of the Norfolk coast, the tide does not go out very far. Parking is easy and it is perfect for a picnic.

Guest reviews

Our whole holiday was very good indeed , the position of Fridays Barn right opposite the road down to the beach, the local amenities were also only a short walk away which is always very useful and also the sun shone if not all day most of every day that we were on holiday. So three cheers for Fridays Barn and Salthouse . Thank you.

Three generations of Tomalas had a great week at Fridays barn. The house was superb well kitted out for adults and children (plenty of toys and a safe garden).

We had previously stayed in this cottage so knew it well. It is well equipped, comfortable and makes an ideal base for a break at any time of the year.

Lovely, stylish house with well equipped kitchen and outdoor dining area with uninterrupted view all the way to the sea. The village has a pub with great food, a crab and ice cream shack and a small shop for basic provisions and gifts. The house has been beautifully renovated. One of the bedrooms and both bathrooms are at ground level. Ideally for families.

Friday's Barn is in a good place, walking distance to the pub and local shop. Very near a shingle beach and within easy access of sandy beaches at Cromer and Wells next the Sea. Extremely well equipped, we wanted for nothing with games, DVDs, WiFi and even a wireless speaker for your phone or tablet. Very comfortable. The drive is quite steep so be careful if your car has a low front!

We wanted a cottage/house in the Salthouse area for a family get-together, and needed beds for 6 adults and two children, so the layout of the cottage was just right, as there is two bedrooms where you walk through one to get to the other, and one being a room with single beds (+toys!) ideal for our needs with two little grandchildren + parents. The second double bedroom is opposite, the third double bedroom is on the ground floor as is a modern shower room with toilet and a separate bathroom with toilet - again perfect for our needs. The open plan kitchen is very modern with excellent equipment throughout and opens onto a living room with a lovely big floor area and large comfy settee, with a lovely Welsh dresser which has plentiful array of lovely pottery. There is a separate sitting room with television and DVD player and a wonderful selection of DVDs. The situation of this cottage is just above the coast road, but it is on a rise so you don't see the traffic, and later in the day it is quiet, and almost no traffic in the night. It is on a bend in the road so care is needed when coming down the drive, and better to have someone in the road to guide out, but this is not a problem. The joy is that it is opposite a little road down to the shingle beach, so the view from many windows is of fields complete with cows and the shingle bank, and if it is high tide you can see ships on the horizon. There is a small garden complete with furniture and BBQ. For our long weekend all of this was perfect, and it had the feeling of a very nice, accommodating family wanting you to enjoy their home too!
